Bishops qualify for Swiss LNC final

Bishops hosted RC Luzern in a hotly contested LNC home semi-final played at OZ Schönau, St. Gallen.

A close encounter for the entire 80 minutes, both teams displayed some bruising defence and attacking prowess. Scoring was opened in the 18th minute by Club President and utility Andreas Kern who played a key role at fullback. However, after 20 minutes of sweeping attacks and solid defence from both teams, RC Luzern capitalised on a Bishops defensive error, driving a penalty to touch on the St. Gallen 5 metre line. With a clever line out call, RCL caught Bishops napping and dived over in the corner to even the scores 5- 5.

Pressuring RCL into a turnover immediately after the kick off, Bishops strung phases together and there was no stopping prop Johannes Eberle, who powered over the try-line with a pick and go to score. Captain, Oliver Baumgartner converted, giving Bishops a 12 - 5 lead going into the half-time break.

The 2nd half continued in similar fashion with errors creeping into the game for both teams due to the heat and exhaustion. RCL were the first to get on the board with a converted try at the 53 minute mark.

With the match tied at 12 - 12, both teams lifted in intensity. However, it was flanker and Man-of-the-match, Daniel Roduner who made yet another tackle breaking run to put Adrian Bollinger into space. Bollinger left the last defender grasping at air with a perfectly timed side-step and scored under the posts. Baumgartner added the extras and Bishops held on to win 19 - 12.

The semi-final win means Bishops will meet the winner of today's match, RC Würenlos vs RC Biel-Bienne, in the LNC final next Sunday in Nyon.

Thanks to RC Luzern and our referee for a game played in true rugby spirit - hard but fair! A special thanks to OZ Schönau for the fantastic field and support from the Caretaker - finally a flat playing surface at home and some shade for spectators! Thanks also to our sponsors, but most importantly our 16th man, our club/team support!
