Bishops finish on a positive note despite heavy defeat to Zug RC

Zug win 55-15

Finishing the game with a try to president Andreas (Schinken) Kern in the 80th minute despite only having 13 players for the closing minutes of the match, Bishops showed promising signs against B-League-Relegated Zug Rugby Club. However, continued ill-discipline, and infringements enabled Zug to run away with the match.

Working hard to stay in touch following early soft tries in the first half to Zug, Bishops went into the break 21-10 down. Captain Oliver Baumgartner displayed one of his signature powerful drives to cross the line for a 5-pointer and substitute inside centre Ivan Ooysthusen (for Tom Wright), also crossed the white wash, cashing in on a well-weighted grubber kick from number 10, Sandro Meyer.

However, a red card as a result of an altercation involving a non-playing member of the squad, meant Bishops were reduced to 14 players with more than 30 minutes of the match still remaining. All hopes of reeling in the blue and whites dissipated as the men from St. Gallen were unable to stem the tide of continuous attack, falling off numerous tackles and failing to bring their opponents to ground, conceding 5 tries to 1 in the second half. Full back Alex Mallet received a yellow card in the closing stages of the match as a result of high tackle and continuous infringements from the St. Gallen team.

Man of the match was awarded to lock Colin Weibel, who has shown constant improvement through out the season. Sandro Meyer and hooker Johannes Eberle were also mentioned for their contribution and impact on the game.

Bishops will take a 2-week break before starting their 2nd round preparations with the goal of balancing the books in 2019.

Thanks to Zug RC for hosting, the ref and naturally our support crew.
