Season opener positive start for Bishops

In surprisingly dry and warm conditions, Rugby Club St. Gallen Bishops kicked off their 2019/20 season on a positive note, downing RC Solothurn 27-5.

Bishops ran in 3 tries to 1 with Daniel Roduner (9'), Maxime Wendt (15') and Captain, Oliver Baumgartner (22') all crossing the chalk. Baumgartner also slotted 1 from 3 conversions.

A defensive lapse in their red zone saw the Bishops too slow off the line, allowing the Solothurn forwards to bust over on the 30th minute bringing the half time score to 17-5.

After a relatively dominant first half by the Bishops, RC Solothurn better implemented their structures and game plan for the opening 25 minutes of the second half, controlling the ball well and denying Bishops possession. Roduner was denied what was a certain try after the never-give-up mentality of Solothurn saw them dislodge the ball in-goal.

Continued attacking pressure from the Ostschweiz men in the final 15 minutes resulted in 2 further tries with both Baumgartner (70') and Wendt (76') grabbing a brace for the day.

Final score; 27 -5.

Thanks to RC Solothurn for a match played in great spirit. Also to the support from our club members, especially the Cindies, our non-playing Bishops and our referee.

Bishops player of the day was awarded to number 8 Maxime Wendt.
